RATATOSK HEART WRITE-UP.
Emil's will come separately later!
RATATOSK HEART!
You’re thrown to the hard stone ground. Whatever extra senses or abilities you had feel like a gaping piece of you that’s missing. Even trying to use your abilities is bound to make you feel ill—besides that you can almost sense something worming its way into your brain. A certain irrationality? Yes, you need to be here, you need Ratatosk’s power. This constantly hums in the back of your mind. Looking around, you feel like you’re inside of a large tree, even though everything is made of stone, and seems dead here.
There are eight stairways ahead of you, waiting for you to pick your path. Each with a dais with a different Emblem, that you instinctively know the name associated with it: Tenebrae, Lumen, Aqua, Ignis, Ventus, Solum, Glacies, Tonitrus.
There is a center platform with the emblem for Ratatosk’s emblem engraved on it as well, but there is a sense of foreboding if you step onto it now. Prove you are worthy, or face the consequences.
Behind where you landed is one final stone dais, but it’s been destroyed beyond recognition.
IF THEY STEP ON RATATOSK’S EMBLEM:
The insane irrationality grows stronger, for a moment you literally cannot feel your own thoughts beyond the desire to use Ratatosk’s power for great destruction. The moment after it kicks in, there is a burning sensation again, with Ratatosk’s voice in your head.
If you keep going this way, I will kill you.
Everything subsides at once, but the irrational feeling is by far stronger than it was before. And you feel so much more prone towards destruction. You must have it.
DUTY (TENEBRAE)
There is no sensation, just overwhelming darkness. When you arrive, you may have never thought of darkness this way before, but it’s overpowering. You’re not even sure a light would work in this darkness.
But there is the feeling that you can create anything in this space. But how powerful that thing you create will be, you’re not sure.
There was nothing that could be really done to change this area! I mean, if you wanted to, you could make it into a full fledged area of its own. But no one seriously attempted this, and instead kept it to the purpose I intended: Ratatosk’s built in ability to solve his own problems. The problem was he was just too caught up in Aqua to do anything about it. Some of the things made here: Chains for Ignis and a sword (Van), a shadow kitty cat (Pitch), Two streams (Rose), the Eternal Sword (Lloyd), Signs, a flower pot (Mithos)... I think a plug was also made here by Lloyd, as well as seeds. A lot was made.
In essence, this was your one-stop shop for pretty much all the extraneous stuff you needed. And at one point, Rose threatened to create a lamp which dragged Tenebrae back. So, this area is stronger because Tenebrae is guarding it from people making bullshit like lamps in an area of darkness >(
What this means: Ratatosk has a stronger sense of duty! He always did, but he’s starting to remember how to use that to keep him anchored.
Also ++ for everyone who stopped there at some point.
CALM (LUMEN)
The light is far too powerful here, it’s blinding and hurting your eyes, and is somehow making that irrationality plaguing your thoughts far more frantic. It’s very hard to even see the path ahead of you, much less stay calm despite the frustration filling your mind.
…
As you follow the path, there appears to be a completely dead tree. It looks like it used to be surrounded by a lake, but the lake has dried up, but once the tree provided shade for this part of the heart, to lessen the impact of the light.
If there were a way to bring back the water… it would help, but you would also need a new tree.
This area was meant to be kind of maddening. Ratatosk is not a calm person, and just everything about this area was meant to set you ill at ease. I think it played through in a more visceral way the amount of damage Ratatosk’s anger had done to his heart-- he was hamstringing his own ability to keep calm and carry on.
Changes:
Lloyd and Rose helped plant a new tree.
Rose placed a new stream.
Lloyd and Rose also plugged up the lake bed, so it can gradually refill and feed the new tree sapling.
These changes don’t seem like a lot, but they’ll give Ratatosk the ability to rebuild his center, or the calm part of his center. It allows for the changes to take place gradually-- which is why he wasn’t particularly calm when he first woke up. But I’ll get into that, because it’s really a matter for the Ignis area!
ABILITY TO RELATE TO OTHERS (AQUA)
Immediately, you can tell that you’re underwater, and you need to find air fast in this dark cave.
Yeah. THIS WAS MY FLAVOR TEXT ON RESERVE FOR THIS AREA. ._. BUT, don’t let my desire to go off the cuff for this fool you. It was the single most important area in the heart, because it was the area where Ratatosk’s heart’s guardian was trapped, and the area that actually handled his perception of relationships. This guardian was completely cut off from the goingson outside of the heart because he’s been drowning since Ratatosk began using rage as an emotional crutch.
He’d be similar to Determination in Emil’s heart, though I don’t think he fits that niche as easily. Anyway, one of the most important goals of the heart was to save him and fix his domain (Aqua is only actually present in Emil’s heart because she has severed her connection to Ratatosk). Yes, this would have been for naught without also tackling rage, because Ratatosk is pretty emotionally dependent on keeping his rage out so that he doesn’t have to feel other things.
He only vaguely recognized people who had gotten through to Ratatosk during moments of intense bullshit on Ratatosk’s part (only Mithos was immediately recognizable to this Ratatosk).
Changes:
Van let the water out and helped Aquatosk out of the vines.
Lloyd plugged the second waterfall, bringing things back to a more normal level here.
Mithos talked to Aquatosk, albeit in Tenebrae, and they came to an understanding.
Rose reassured Aquatosk she cared about him.
This has forced Ratatosk to re-evaluate how he views relationships. He won’t immediately panic when someone’s getting close to him, which puts him about on a normal person’s level of dealing with the fact that other people exist. He will still be tsun as fuck because that doesn’t actually change about him.
Mithos and Aquatosk coming to an understanding and even fighting together has given Ratatosk a newfound appreciation for Mithos, and he’ll be able to actually listen to the words that he is saying instead of mentally repeating “YOU HURT ME AND KILLED MY TREE AND I HATE YOU.” This is a big accomplishment.
Rose’s words makes Ratatosk MUCH less likely to actively attempt to antagonize her, and maybe they’ll be able to have a normal conversation where he doesn’t get stupidly defensive at a 13 year old.
RAGE (IGNIS)
It’s hot, it’s hot, it’s hot, it’s really hot. You can feel your skin blistering from the heat. You’re on a solid platform, but flames surround it, and there are random spots of magma on the ground. It’s hard to focus on anything besides how hot it is, and in the back of your mind there is forced amazement at this power.
It’s so hot, but even though the heat distortions in the air, you can make out Ratatosk calmly sitting on what looks like a throne of molten rock. He is not taking his eyes off of you. If you look, there are sterling and peridot ribbons tied around his wrists, connected to the chair. The flames lick at them, and they are definitely worn and thin in places, but they somehow manage to survive the heat.
It’s so hot! There is a dais in front of him, but it’s hard to tell if he can reach you from there. But there’s no other way out.
:’D I’m glad that he was appropriately terrifying at the beginning. That is exactly where I wanted him to be-- this particular Ratatosk represented everything wrong about him. He was the one that set the ‘no skills, no weapons’ rules for Ratatosk’s heart, because he was essentially running it.
This is the part that doesn’t give a fuck, he’d rather be angry than listen, and has no qualms with killing everything that catches his ire. Which, he does have a place in Ratatosk’s heart! But as Tenebrae pointed out to... someone, I think Van and Pitch, Rage did not always exist in the form he currently does, and when he did, he had restraints that he broke free of. So the heart wasn’t prepared to deal with something so outsized and destructive, especially when he caught the guardian of the heart off guard and proceeded to drown him for thousands of years.
The restraints were weak, and representative of Ratatosk’s excuses that he wouldn’t hurt Peridot, and also the progress he’d made at dealing with Lloyd despite his anger issues.
Changes:
Pitch had his throat ripped out here.
Van letting the water in dimmed the flames and made the temperatures bearable.
Mithos was attacked.
Mithos chained him back to the throne.
Mithos left a mirror showing all the people standing with him.
Pitch dying and Mithos being attacked definitely ++’d Ratatosk’s bloodlust. And if that had been it, that would have been a bad thing.
But Ignis has been brought back in line in terms of strength, thanks to Van, and Rage was chained by Mithos giving Ratatosk more tools to actually control his anger. The mirror has a limited effect on Rage-- if anything, it makes him angrier because he doesn’t care about the people standing next to him. He’d rather kill them than anything else.
This is the ‘quiet’ Ratatosk was talking about when he woke up. The roar of the flames and Rage’s influence being hamstrung completely takes away his ability to use rage as an emotional clutch, and part of why he wanted space, because Ratatosk DOES have other feelings that he has been almost completely ignoring, and now he has no choice.
PERIDOT (VENTUS)
When you land, the wind immediately knocks you over. It’s powerful, and out of control. It’s going to take a concerted effort to not just fall over at the slightest jump in power.
Next to you, you see the ocean, frenzied by the wind, and the waves are so powerful they’re reaching and flooding Peridot’s cabin. The weather is very stormy here.
--
When you reach Peridot, the cabin is obviously damaged by the waves. The entire ground is soaked, and everything is out of place and a mess within the cabin. The beds are askew, and all of the items are on the ground. It’s like this in all common areas for the cabin: the kitchen, the bathroom, etc.
A strong wave comes again, hitting you in the doorway as you stand there. What will you do?
Peridot! Ratatosk has always had an extremely rocky relationship with them, and so everything about this was meant to show that.
Changes:
Josh, Lloyd, and Rose cleaned things up in here.
Lloyd, Rose, and Van helped draw the water away from Peridot by fixing Aqua.
Lloyd and Rose reduced the wind by fixing Lumen.
Lloyd fixed the door.
Rose brought fresh bed things and decoration to make it homier.
Rose brought the missing bed there.
Rose also put some tsun pillows there.
This puts Ratatosk at a much more stable point of being with Peridot, and while the feelings haven’t completely changed, he could start considering himself an actual part of Peridot soon, and actually enjoy being on the team.
Which I’m sure would help with feelings jenga-ing everything.
SANITY (SOLUM)
The smell of iron and other minerals is powerful here, but so is the movement of the earth. There are mudslides happening along the hills, parts of the ground are breaking off and shifting, either to make more hills, or to make more valleys. Nothing is constant, and have you ever tried to walk in a constant earthquake? You never know when the ground is about to give.
Steam exits from the cracks in the ground.
Just a bit ahead is a lone tree—it’s young, but it looks like it’s only just managing to get its hold in the ground.
The tree was actually something Lloyd had planted with careful interaction with Ratatosk and liberal application of the ‘you are an asshole’ label. So, this tree could have acted as your one-stop shop for ‘hey, go here next!’ And it was used that way a lot, actually!
Changes:
Van fixing Aqua and reducing Ignis’ power reduced the steam coming out of the ground, which helped with the shifting of the land and the landslides. So, now the tree has something more firm to dig its roots into.
Rose brought a stream for the tree.
Lloyd lovingly touched the tree.
So, the tree, in conjunction with Lumen, will give Ratatosk some insight. Or at least, he’ll have a coherent train of thought. Solum wasn’t something you could fix directly-- it mostly depended on fixing other areas. And you guys did that!
THE PAST (GLACIES)
It’s so cold—you really should have worn a jacket, or a parka, at least some gloves. And it’s still snowing—you’re already in drifts up to your knees. But someone has been here recently, leaving you a path to follow.
…
It leads to an ice grove—there is no life here. It’s far too cold for anything to actually thrive here. If anything, it feels even colder here than it did when you first arrived. Like someone dumped some water on you, though that can’t be right, because aside from melted snow, you’re pretty much dry.
There is an ice wall ahead, with several deep scratches. Somebody wants to destroy that wall…
This entire area needed to be moved from its stasis. It wasn’t exactly required to fix to tackle Ignis, but fixing it did help! It made Ignis a bossfight that two characters could handle instead of three+. Basically, Ratatosk has been nursing this grudge for thousands of years thanks to one event. He refuses to let go of the past.
Again, scratches are some of Ratatosk’s pathetic attempts to fix his own heart that didn’t work very well.
Changes:
Pitch found Rage’s original changes and sent them to Mithos.
Pitch and Lloyd removed the cold crystal, allowing things to melt a bit.
Van destroyed the ice wall.
Lloyd completely destroyed the crystal.
This will be as effective as Ratatosk makes it-- but he can move on from Mithos’s betrayal, and his tree to some degree now.
AATHER (TONITRUS)
You’re immediately hit with a blast of lightning—and it hurts and dazes you… and excites the voice in your head that just wants to destroy the world with all this power. You’re not sure how long you’re dazed, but another blast of lightning lands next to you, and you know you should probably move. Another blast like the first will probably kill you. Or at least seriously injure you.
The scene in front of you is Wonderland, but it’s hard to navigate without being struck by lightning. I hope you aren’t afraid of it. Either way, in the distance, there seems to be something out of place.
Aather! This place was out of balance as well, and fixing it helped with Ventus and a bit with Lumen. :’)
Changes made:
Van, Rose, and Josh turned on the lightning rods.
Rose found Ratatosk’s stupid dere for Lloyd and Mithos.
… and then took one of the tsun pillows with her throughout the heart.
Josh cleaned up the ring.
Van cleaned up the clinic... and then almost got a poison memory.
Josh turned on the big lightning rod.
THIS AMOUNTS TO Ratatosk having a much more balanced relationship with Aather, in particular games and the clinic. Ratatosk has been nursing a grudge against the clinic for awhile thanks to the darkness event, and he’s only really played the trauma games because that’s how things with him and Emil work usually... So, he’ll be more relaxed with being trapped in Aather, if not completely happy because who gets happy about kidnappings, man.
EMIL’S WRITE-UP WILL BE FORTHCOMING, THERE WAS SIGNIFICANTLY LESS CHANGED THERE COMPARATIVELY. And I wanted to get this out before I forgot all the changes. You can ask me things!
Emil's will come separately later!
